Herbal Remedy by Joan Dreyer, 2022
In 2022, legal access to abortion in the United States became more limited for the first time in decades.  “Herbal Remedy” portrays herbs and plants that have been used to induce abortions.  While beautiful to look at, there is a high risk of morbidity and mortality when these herbs and plants are ingested. The consequences of ingestion included organ failure, poisoning and even death. “Herbal Remedy” is a testament to our cultural and global indifference to women’s suffering.

Score: Mixed Media Art by Joan Dreyer
Solo Exhibition; Vulcan Gallery, W-16 1st Floor
On View: January 14 – April 30, 2023
Reception Date: April 8, 4 pm – 6 pm

Score explores 20 years of the work of Virginia-based mixed media artist, Joan Dreyer. While developing her MFA thesis at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, PA, Joan began taking tools, techniques and imagery that have been historically considered “women’s work” and transforming them into innovative, contemporary art that is responsive to the tone and tensions of our times. Created by combining fiber techniques with unexpected materials like X-rays, her work is a subtle art that asks questions about life, loss, symbolism, and the impact of war instead of providing one size fits all answers. The artist’s work provides a space for the contemplation of life stages that we all encounter. The result is a body of work that allows for meaningful but also multiple interpretations by the viewer.

2021 Mark Jenkins, “Review: In the Galleries”, The Washington Post, January 29, Arts & Style

Joan Dreyer’s “World Map,” from 2008, is a fabric chart flanked by tags from upscale clothing items made around the world, emblems of internationalization from a less contentious time. It’s next to a more urgent world vision: an egg-shaped papier-mache globe covered in newsy images, including photos of masked people.”
